It’s been building up slowly and the cold weather is what finally brings it out.

If your car won’t start in the morning, here are the most common reasons and what you can do about it before things get expensive.

1. Weak or Failing Battery

This is the number one reason a car won’t start, especially in winter. Batteries don’t like the cold. As temperatures drop, the power inside the battery weakens and old batteries struggle to turn the engine over.

Signs your battery is on its way out:

• Slow crank when starting
• Clicking noise when you turn the key
• Dashboard lights flickering
• Battery light on
• Car only starts after multiple attempts
• Electrical faults

Most batteries last around five years, but short trips around Medway can kill them sooner because the alternator doesn’t get enough time to recharge the battery properly.

2. Alternator Problems

A lot of people think a flat battery automatically means the battery is bad, but that’s not always the case. The alternator charges the battery while you drive. If it fails, your battery drains every time you use the car.

• Headlights dimming at night
• Electrical issues
• Burning smell
• Car starts one day and dies the next

3. Starter Motor Failure

If the battery is good but the engine won’t turn over at all, the starter motor may be the problem.

Signs of a bad starter motor:

• Single click when you turn the key
• No crank noise at all
• Car starts randomly and then stops starting again
• Smoke or burning smell near the engine

Starters can fail gradually. Sometimes you’ll get a warning, sometimes they go suddenly and leave you stuck outside the house at 7am.

4. Cold Weather Fuel Issues

Diesel engines in particular can be hard to start on cold mornings. Glow plugs help warm the fuel so it can ignite properly. When glow plugs fail, the engine struggles to fire.

Signs of glow plug problems:

• Car cranks but won’t start
• Rough idle when cold
• Glow plug warning light
• White smoke on start up

5. Poor Electrical Connections or Ground Faults

Corroded battery terminals, loose ground straps and damaged wiring can all stop the engine from starting. Medway roads and winter road salt don’t help, as they speed up corrosion on older cars.

Things to look for:

• Green or white corrosion on battery terminals
• Loose clamps
• Random electrical issues
• Lights flickering

Fixing this early prevents damage to the battery and alternator.

6. Fuel Pump or Sensor Problems

Sometimes the car is turning over fine but still won’t start. When that happens, it’s usually a lack of fuel delivery or a sensor failing.

Common causes include:

• Fuel pump failure
• Blocked fuel filter
• Crankshaft sensor failure
• Camshaft sensor failure

These faults often don’t give you much warning. The car drives perfectly the day before, then refuses to start the next morning.

7. Flooded Engine on Short Trips

• Strong fuel smell
