If you’re hearing a cold-start rattle, seeing oil pressure warnings, or you’re close to the wet belt interval, it’s usually the point where small symptoms can quickly turn into serious engine damage. Wet belts don’t fail suddenly; they wear through the oil system, which is why early inspection is key.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we carry out inspection-led wet belt replacements for Tonbridge drivers at our Rochester workshop, checking the belt and oil system properly before any work is agreed, so the issue is fixed before it becomes a major repair.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait till your belt goes. Call Medway Vehicle Services and we can get it resolved as soon as possible.

Service History Shows It’s Due
A wet timing belt runs inside the engine, lubricated by the same oil that lubricates the bottom end. We regularly see this design across a range of Ford petrol and diesel engines, as well as PSA petrol and diesel engines produced from around 2012 onward.
When the belt deteriorates, fragments break off into the sump. Those fragments block the oil pump pickup. Oil pressure drops, the warning light comes on, and if the engine keeps running, the bottom end starts to wear. By the time the belt itself fails, the damage is usually already done.
We’d always rather replace the belt while the engine is still healthy and the repair stays straightforward. What we want to avoid is belt debris blocking the oil pump pickup, causing oil starvation and internal engine wear that can turn a wet belt replacement into a much larger engine repair or replacement bill.
Driving with an intermittent oil-pressure light can quickly turn a smaller repair into a much more expensive engine problem. If the light has been on, even briefly, the inspection is the call before the next long run.
Wet belt jobs come into the workshop as inspections first, not as straight belt swaps. The strip-down covers the belt itself, the oil pump pickup, the sump for debris, and the chain or auxiliary drive, depending on the engine. We road-test before hand-back and check the vehicle thoroughly before completion.
Parts come through GSF Car Parts and Euro Car Parts, both trade suppliers we use across every job. If we find the oil pump pickup is already partially blocked, we will tell you on the day, with photos if helpful, before we go further. We do not fit a new belt without addressing related oil system issues first.

Our workshop sits on Medway City Estate in Rochester, off the A228 just north of the M2. From Tonbridge, the run up is the A26 to Maidstone and then the A229 north to the M2 junction. Roughly 50 minutes in normal traffic, longer in the school-run window, and the Friday evening peak.
Many Tonbridge drivers drop the car off in the morning and either work from home for the day or get a lift back. The train option is Tonbridge to Rochester via Strood (changing at Tonbridge or Paddock Wood depending on the timetable), which can make same-day collection easier if the vehicle stays overnight. Ring us before you set off if you want us to confirm the morning slot.
Pricing depends on the engine, the condition of the oil pump pickup, and whether the sump needs to come off. We quote in writing after the inspection, never over the phone from a registration alone. The written quote covers parts, labour, and VAT in one figure, and if the inspection turns up oil-pump work the original quote did not cover, we will re-quote before doing it.
Once the oil pump pick-up starts to block, the engine can lose pressure faster than the warning light catches it. A blocked pick-up doesn’t repair. It ends in a top-end rebuild or a replacement engine, and either of those costs several times what a planned belt change does. If the car is showing any of the cold-start rattle, low oil pressure, or grit-in-oil signs, we recommend bringing it in sooner rather than waiting for the next service interval.

A wet belt quote without an inspection may not reflect the full condition of the engine and oil system. Two cars with the same engine and the same mileage can need very different work depending on how the oil has been looked after, what the previous service history covered, and whether the oil-pressure light has been on. We would rather give you an accurate number on the day than a low number on the phone we then have to revise upward.
What we will tell you on the phone: whether your engine is one we see often, what the inspection itself involves, and how the morning runs from drop-off to written quote.
The most common examples we see are the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (across Fiesta, Focus, Puma, B-Max, C-Max, and Transit Courier) and the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel (Focus, Fiesta, Transit Connect). Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall PureTech 1.2 petrol engines from roughly 2014 onward also use the design. Ring with the registration plate, and we will tell you on the call.
Most wet belt jobs run to a one-day workshop slot for the strip and rebuild, plus final checks before hand-back. If the oil pump pickup needs replacing as well, the day extends or the car stays overnight. We tell you which on the inspection morning, not at booking.
The inspection charge is the same whether you authorise the work or not. What changes is whether the inspection cost rolls into the wet belt job quote (it does if you go ahead) or sits as a separate inspection invoice (if you decide to wait or get a second opinion).
We would generally recommend not driving the vehicle until it has been assessed. A flickering light on cold start that goes out within a minute should still be checked promptly; a steady light at idle or under load may require vehicle recovery rather than continued driving. We can give you the number of a local recovery service or talk through whether your breakdown cover applies. The 50-minute drive from Tonbridge may not be advisable if the engine is already showing oil-pressure symptoms.
We’ll pause the work, contact you, and explain what it is and the cost. Nothing extra gets done without your say-so. If you'd rather we leave it alone and finish the job as quoted, that's fine.
For cars outside the manufacturer's warranty window, the answer is no. Independent specialist work should not automatically affect warranty rights when the work is carried out to the required specification and records are kept. For cars still inside warranty, we'll tell you honestly whether the dealership is the cheaper call on this specific job.
