A worn wet belt can cause serious engine damage long before the belt itself snaps. Because the belt runs inside the engine oil, deteriorating rubber particles can circulate through the oil system, block the oil pickup, reduce oil pressure, and eventually damage bearings, camshafts, and turbochargers. Early warning signs often include cold-start rattles, oil pressure lights, rough running, timing-related fault codes, or debris found during servicing.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we carry out wet belt inspections and replacements for Canterbury drivers who want to deal with the problem before it becomes an engine rebuild. We inspect the belt, oil condition, and related components properly before quoting, using the correct parts and procedures for Ford EcoBoost, EcoBlue, and other wet-belt engine systems.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait till your belt goes. Call Medway Vehicle Services and we can get it resolved as soon as possible.

Service History Shows It’s Due
You may have found us because your Ford is approaching the mileage where the wet belt becomes the next service item, or because you’ve heard a cold-start rattle that suggests it may need attention.
Either way, the question is the same: who can carry out this work properly outside the dealer route? We service all makes and models from our Medway City Estate workshop, including the engine families that use the wet belt design. The technicians who inspect your engine are the same ones who carry out the work.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we work on wet belts, which run inside the engine oil instead of dry behind a cover. Ford uses this design in the 1.0 EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines to reduce friction, improve efficiency, and meet emissions targets.
The belt drives the camshafts and often the oil pump, but when it degrades, rubber particles can block the oil pickup and lead to serious engine damage. At Medway Vehicle Services, we regularly see this when maintenance is delayed.
We rarely see wet belts fail without warning, but the signs can be easy to miss because they often sound like other engine issues. Before you book, we recommend looking out for the symptoms below.
We would take these signs seriously:
Mileage is one of the most common reasons drivers contact us. If your Ford has crossed around 80,000 miles and the wet belt has not been replaced, we would usually recommend getting it checked, even if the engine sounds fine today. At Medway Vehicle Services, we prefer to act before the symptoms get worse.

Wet belt replacement is more involved than a conventional cambelt job because of its location inside the engine. The front cover, sump, and key components are removed to access it, and on many engines, the oil pump drive belt is also replaced, where it runs in the same oil system and shares similar wear risks.
We begin with a full inspection of the belt and oil pickup screen to check for debris, as this determines whether a standard replacement is enough or if additional cleaning is needed. The belt, tensioner, seals, and oil are all replaced, along with a new filter to ensure a clean start.
After the job, we explain what we found inside the engine and the condition of the old parts, focusing on what the engine actually needs rather than fixed service intervals.
At Medway Vehicle Services, pricing depends on the engine, model, and what we find when the cover comes off. We always quote in writing after inspection and before work begins. The quote includes the belt, oil pump belt (where needed), tensioner, seals, oil, filter, and labour.
If we find debris in the sump, we’ll quote that separately so you can decide whether to proceed. Parts are supplied through established trade suppliers, and we’ll confirm the brand before starting.
Wet belt jobs become urgent if there’s a cold-start rattle lasting over 30 seconds or getting worse over time, or any sign of low oil pressure, such as warning lights or flickering on start-up. Both indicate possible belt or oil pickup issues, and we’d recommend booking immediately to avoid engine damage.

Our workshop is at Unit 3 Cliffe Yard, Anthonys Way, Medway City Estate, Rochester ME2 4DY. From Faversham, it’s a drive via the A2 and M2 (around 25–35 minutes depending on traffic). Most customers either drop the car off for the day or leave it overnight, and we’ll work around what suits you when booking.
The most common examples we see are the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (across Fiesta, Focus, Puma, B-Max, C-Max, and Transit Courier) and the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel (Focus, Fiesta, Transit Connect). Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall PureTech 1.2 petrol engines from roughly 2014 onward also use the design. Ring with the registration plate, and we will tell you on the call.
Most wet belt jobs run to a one-day workshop slot for the strip and rebuild, plus final checks before hand-back. If the oil pump pickup needs replacing as well, the day extends or the car stays overnight. We tell you which on the inspection morning, not at booking.
The inspection charge is the same whether you authorise the work or not. What changes is whether the inspection cost rolls into the wet belt job quote (it does if you go ahead) or sits as a separate inspection invoice (if you decide to wait or get a second opinion).
We would generally recommend not driving the vehicle until it has been assessed. A flickering light on cold start that goes out within a minute should still be checked promptly; a steady light at idle or under load may require vehicle recovery rather than continued driving. We can give you the number of a local recovery service or talk through whether your breakdown cover applies. The 50-minute drive from Tonbridge may not be advisable if the engine is already showing oil-pressure symptoms.
We’ll pause the work, contact you, and explain what it is and the cost. Nothing extra gets done without your say-so. If you'd rather we leave it alone and finish the job as quoted, that's fine.
For cars outside the manufacturer's warranty window, the answer is no. Independent specialist work should not automatically affect warranty rights when the work is carried out to the required specification and records are kept. For cars still inside warranty, we'll tell you honestly whether the dealership is the cheaper call on this specific job.
