Because the belt runs inside the engine oil, wear can spread through the oil system and cause bigger damage if it’s left too long.

We work on wet belt engines where the timing belt runs inside the engine oil rather than behind a dry cover. Manufacturers use this setup on some modern petrol and diesel engines, mainly for quieter running and tighter engine packaging.
The downside is that replacement is much more involved. We don’t treat this like a standard cambelt job, because it isn’t one. A wet belt replacement usually means stripping further into the engine, removing the sump, checking for rubber contamination, and making sure the oil system is clean before the car leaves us.
That changes the time, parts, labour, and price. A standard cambelt can be a straightforward hours-long job. A wet belt replacement needs a more careful process.
We start with your registration plate, mileage, age of the vehicle, service history, and any symptoms you’ve noticed. Some affected engines can show serious wear between six and ten years of service, or around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but the correct interval depends on the exact engine and manufacturer guidance.
We’d want to inspect the car sooner if you’ve noticed any of these signs:
We don’t recommend waiting if those symptoms are present. When a wet belt starts shedding rubber, it can block the oil pump pickup and starve the engine of oil. At that point, the job can quickly move from a planned belt replacement to an engine rebuild or replacement.
We replace the wet belt itself, the tensioner, and any associated pulleys. We drop the sump, clean the oil pump pickup screen, check whether any related parts need replacing, and refill with the correct oil specification. We don’t reuse the old oil. The contamination is the entire reason the belt needs replacing.
When you book, we’ll give you a rough turnaround for your specific engine. We don’t quote drive-in/drive-out times before we’ve seen the car, because the part availability for some PSA and Ford engines varies week to week.
Wet belt jobs cost noticeably more than a conventional cambelt because the engine has to come apart further to reach the belt. The figure depends on the engine, on whether the oil pump needs replacing, and on parts availability for your specific car. Pricing depends on the vehicle. We quote in writing after we’ve inspected it.
There’s no obligation if the quote isn’t right for you. We’d rather you knew the number up front than be surprised at handover.
We’d recommend bringing your car in sooner if the engine rattle doesn’t clear after a minute, if the oil pressure light has flickered or stayed on, or if the wet belt is already past its replacement interval. We’d rather inspect it early than see you face engine damage later. A planned wet belt replacement costs far less than an emergency engine rebuild.
Wet belt jobs become urgent if there’s a cold-start rattle lasting over 30 seconds or getting worse over time, or any sign of low oil pressure, such as warning lights or flickering on start-up. Both indicate possible belt or oil pickup issues, and we’d recommend booking immediately to avoid engine damage.
Our workshop is on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, about an hour from Margate via the A299 Thanet Way and the M2. The journey works either way: drop the car with us in the morning, head home, or carry on into the city, and we’ll keep you updated through the day.

Most Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engines from 2012 onwards, Ford 1.5 EcoBlue and 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engines, and Peugeot, Citroën, and DS 1.2 PureTech petrol engines use a wet belt. Tell us your registration when you call, and we'll confirm before you book in.

As a general guide, many owners start checking around six years or 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but we'd rather check the specific schedule for your car than apply a category average.
If your car is still under manufacturer warranty, check the warranty terms before booking warranty-related work outside the dealer network. Once the car is past warranty, an independent workshop can carry out the repair using suitable parts and the correct procedure.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the engine, on what else has been damaged, and on what reconditioned or used engines are available. We'll be honest about both options when we've seen the car.
Yes. If the car is in for the wet belt anyway, an interim service, a full service, brake or clutch work, diagnostics, or a tyre change can run alongside if parts are in stock or can be ordered for the same window. We mentioned this on the inspection call, so the second visit isn't needed.
Some people make that call. The risk is that when the belt fails, it can fail at speed on a motorway, and the cost and inconvenience of a roadside breakdown plus an engine rebuild is significantly worse than a planned replacement.
