Range Rover Evoque Ingenium Timing Chain Replacement in Kent

If you’ve been told the engine’s finished, or handed a quote with four figures on it, it’s worth knowing what’s actually being described. The chain on the 2.0 Ingenium doesn’t usually let go out of nowhere. It wears longer over time, the camshafts drift out of step with the crankshaft, and the engine control unit picks the mismatch up and responds with a correlation code, limp mode, or a car that turns over once and then won’t fire.

That’s a job this workshop does. The car comes to us on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, or we fetch it on our own truck, and nothing gets stripped until we’ve confirmed the timing drive is where the fault actually is.

Signs The Chain Has Stretched, And How We Prove It

There’s no service interval to work to on this one. A chain gets replaced on condition, and the condition changes slowly, so the first sign is nearly always a noise rather than a breakdown. From cold the oil has drained back and the tensioner hasn’t been pressurised yet, so the slack in a worn chain is free to slap against its guides until oil pressure takes it up a few seconds later. That’s why the rattle vanishes once the engine warms through, and why owners talk themselves out of it.

What Evoque owners describe when they call:

A Metallic Rattle For A Few Seconds From Cold
Timing Correlation Or Over-Advanced Fault Codes
Limp Mode Or An Engine Management Light
Rough Running, Hesitation Or Poor Starting
One Turn Of The Engine, Then Nothing

None of that proves the chain by itself. A cam sensor, its wiring, an oil pressure problem or a fuelling fault can all produce much the same picture, and we won’t sign a four-figure strip-down off the back of a code somebody read out in a car park. Our diagnostic is £69. We pull stored and pending codes, read the freeze-frame data captured at the moment the fault set, watch cam and crank signals live, and listen to the engine from cold.

Where the chain job follows, that £69 is usually credited against the repair when the work is booked in. It’s job dependent rather than automatic, and we’ll tell you where you stand before you commit to anything.

What Happens On The Day, And What Happens After

Nothing begins without your approval. Once the diagnosis is done you get the figure and what it covers, and if you want time to think, the car sits untouched.

When the work’s finished the timing is verified, the codes are cleared and then rechecked to make sure they stay clear, and the car goes out on the road before it comes back to you. There’s a one-year warranty on the parts we fit. We’ll also explain in plain words what we found and why it happened, because on a bill this size the explanation is part of what you’re paying for.

Chain Only, Or Guides, Tensioner And Sprockets Too

It depends on what the parts measure. With the engine open, the guides, tensioner and sprockets get checked properly rather than replaced as a matter of course. If they measure good, you don’t have to buy them and the job costs you less. If they’re worn, changing them while everything is already apart is the sensible call, because nearly all the cost of this repair is the labour to reach the chain, not the parts themselves.

We show you what we’ve found and what it means, and the decision on anything still within tolerance is yours to make. We don’t fit parts you haven’t agreed to, and we don’t tell you a component is finished when it isn’t.

What An Evoque Ingenium Chain Job Costs

Between £1,400 and £2,500. Where a particular car lands in that range comes down to two things.

The first is scope: the chain on its own, or chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets together. The second is what turns up on strip. If guide material has broken away, it doesn’t stay put, it goes into the oil, so the oil side gets checked rather than assumed. You’ll have the figure and know what it covers before anything is started, and it doesn’t move unless you agree to it.

On an older Evoque this can be more money than you want to put into the car, and we’d rather say that than take the work. If that’s how it reads once we’ve been through it, you’ll get the verdict straight with the findings in front of you, and what happens to the car after that is your decision.

Why A Medway Independent Takes On This Engine

We’re not a Land Rover house and won’t pretend to be. What comes through these doors week in, week out is timing drive work: wet belts, chains, guides, tensioners, timing components starved of oil, and engines opened up to find out why they wore out early rather than simply to put new parts in.

Most of that workload is Ford, Peugeot and Citroen, and there’s a reason for it. Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and PSA’s 1.2 PureTech both run a belt in oil that degrades and blocks the oil pickup, so those cars arrive here in numbers. That’s the consequence of one shared design fault, not the limit of what we’ll take on. All makes come in, including older cars a main dealer would rather not have on the ramp.

Getting The Evoque To Us In Rochester

The workshop is on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, just off the A289, and owners drive in from Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, Strood and Rochester itself, with Gravesend drivers picking up the A2 east and coming in on the A289. Plenty of the cars we see on this engine have travelled further across Kent to get here, which is why the diagnosis comes first and the figure is agreed before anyone starts.

An Evoque whose chain has jumped isn’t being driven anywhere, and we don’t expect you to sort that out yourself. We run our own recovery truck, so a car that won’t start, sits in limp mode or has been standing on a drive for months gets collected and brought in. Tell us where it’s parked and whether it rolls and steers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Between £1,400 and £2,500 at our Rochester workshop. The spread is mostly scope, whether the chain goes in alone or the guides, tensioner and sprockets go with it, plus whatever shows up once the engine is apart. You get the figure after the diagnosis and before any work is started.
There's no date or mileage we'd hold you to. It's a condition job, and the condition tends to announce itself: a metallic rattle for a few seconds from cold that fades as oil pressure builds, a correlation code, rough running, poor starting or limp mode. If yours is doing that, have it looked at rather than waiting for it to get louder.
It depends on what the parts measure once the engine is open. If the guides, tensioner and sprockets come up good, you don't have to buy them and the job costs less. If they're worn, replacing them while we're in there avoids paying the same labour twice. We show you the findings and you decide.
That isn't a question any independent can answer for your car. Whether a particular vehicle is covered by a manufacturer action or a goodwill contribution is for a franchised dealer with your VIN in front of them, and we can't authorise or speak for anybody else's warranty. What we can offer is a price agreed before work starts and a one-year warranty on the parts we fit.
Yes. We run our own recovery truck rather than arranging somebody else's, so a car that turns over and won't fire, sits in limp mode or has been parked up for months gets fetched and brought to the Medway City Estate. Let us know where it's standing and whether it rolls and steers.
That's how we'd rather do it. The £69 diagnostic covers stored and pending codes, the freeze-frame data from when the fault set, live cam and crank signals and a cold start listen, so the timing drive is confirmed before you agree to an engine strip. Where the chain job follows, that £69 is usually credited against the repair, though it's job dependent and we'll make the position clear beforehand.
