Timing Chain Replacement in West Malling

A metallic rattle for a few seconds on a cold morning, or one turn of the starter and then nothing, and somebody has already said the words timing chain and quoted you four figures. This page won’t give you a price, and it’s fairer to say why in the same breath: the labour differs enormously between engines, and differs again depending on whether the chain is caught while it’s stretching or after it’s jumped. A number published on a page is a number someone gets held to a year later.

What we can give you is the one figure that doesn’t move. Diagnosis is £69, and it comes before anyone opens anything.

Chain, Dry Belt or Wet Belt: Find Out Which You Have First

Three different repairs hide behind the phrase timing chain, and they cost nothing like each other. Some engines drive the camshafts with a metal chain running in oil, at the front of the engine or, on a good many designs, at the back against the gearbox. Some use a conventional rubber cambelt behind a dry cover, changed to a mileage interval. And some run a cambelt inside the engine, sitting in the oil.

That last one catches people out. As the belt ages it sheds material into the sump, the debris collects at the oil pickup, and once the pickup is blocked the oil stops reaching the top of the engine. The engine follows shortly after. Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech used across Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall are both built this way, so if you’ve got a 208, a C3 or a Fiesta there is no chain in there to replace. That’s a wet belt job, it has its own page on this site, and it starts from £599+VAT. The concentration of those marques is down to that one design, not a limit on what we take in.

Whichever of the three you have, the symptoms overlap almost completely:

A Metallic Rattle From Cold That Fades After A Few Seconds
Timing Correlation Codes, Stored Or Pending
Limp Mode, Or A Light That Comes And Goes
Hesitation, A Misfire Or A Reluctant Start
One Turn Of The Engine, Then Nothing At All

A stretched chain, a tensioner that’s lost pressure, a broken guide and a wet belt beginning to shed can all produce that same noise and that same warning light. Quoting a strip-down off a description given over the phone is guesswork with a large bill attached, so we don’t do it. The £69 buys a method: listening to the engine from cold, before oil pressure takes up the slack in the drive; pulling stored and pending codes; reading the freeze-frame data captured at the moment the fault set; and watching the cam and crank signals live while the engine runs.

Most diagnostics are same-day. Deeper fault finding isn’t, and we’d rather say so than promise otherwise, because a fault that only shows under load or after a few miles has to be driven to be found and a road test can’t be rushed into a slot. The £69 is usually credited against the repair when the work is booked in with us. It’s job dependent rather than automatic, it doesn’t always apply on smaller jobs, and you’ll know which way it falls before you commit to anything.

Is Changing A Timing Chain A Big Job?

It depends almost entirely on where the chain sits. On some engines it’s behind a cover at the front, and while the work is careful, it’s contained. On others the chain drive is at the back of the block, which means separating the engine and gearbox and taking the gearbox out to reach it. Same part, completely different day.

Either way it’s a job measured in a day or more, not an hour, and the car stays with us. If you need to arrange a lift or plan around being without it, say so when you book and we’ll tell you what we know once we’ve established which engine we’re dealing with.

Chain Only, Or Guides, Tensioner And Sprockets As Well

That gets decided with the engine open, on what the parts measure, rather than everything being replaced as a matter of course. A chain that’s stretched has usually been working at its guides for a long time, and worn plastic doesn’t always stay in one piece. If guide material has broken away it goes into the oil, so the oil side gets checked rather than assumed. Where the guides, tensioner and sprockets are still good, you don’t buy them. Where they’re not, doing them while everything is already apart is the sensible call, because nearly all of what this repair costs is the labour to reach the chain and nobody wants to pay that twice.

Why Nobody Can Quote A Chain Price Off Your Number Plate

You’ll find sites that take a registration and hand back an instant figure, and others publishing a range so wide it covers most of what the car is worth. A spread that big isn’t a price. It’s an admission that the job can’t be priced without seeing the engine.

What sits behind it is this. Front-mounted chain, or rear-mounted with the gearbox to come out. One chain, or two plus guides, tensioner and sprockets. And the one that changes everything: whether the chain has only stretched, or has already jumped and pushed pistons into valves, which stops being a timing job and becomes an engine job. Nothing reading a number plate knows which of those you have.

So the quote is itemised and it comes after the car has been looked at, with parts and labour set out separately. Nothing starts without your approval, and if you want time to think, the car sits untouched.

When The Repair Is Worth More Than The Car

Sometimes the honest end of a diagnosis is that you shouldn’t spend the money. On an older, high-mileage engine, chain work at the back of the block can come to more than the car would fetch running, and you’re owed that verdict plainly rather than sold the job. Being told to leave it alone is a legitimate outcome of a £69 diagnostic, not a wasted one. A few people in that position sell the car on as it stands, and our sister business buys broken Fords, but that’s a route rather than a recommendation.

It goes the other way just as often. All makes are taken here, including older cars a main dealer would rather not have in, and where the rest of the engine is sound a chain is a reason to keep a car going rather than give up on it.

Getting Here From West Malling

The workshop is a single unit on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, and West Malling drivers either come in to us or have the car collected. Driving up, it’s junction 4 of the M20 at Leybourne and then the A228 north through Larkfield, Snodland and Halling into Strood, and onto the estate from there. Twenty-five minutes or so when the A228 is behaving itself.

If the chain has already gone, none of that helps, because the car isn’t going anywhere. We run our own recovery truck. That’s our equipment and our driver, not a recovery firm arranged on your behalf, and it will bring in a car that won’t turn over, one stuck in limp mode, or one that’s been sat on a driveway for months while you worked out what to do with it.

The person who answers the phone is one of the people doing the work. No call centre, no booking platform passing your details to a garage nobody names, and the job ends with a road test and someone explaining in plain words what was found and what was done.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

There's no honest single figure. It depends on whether the chain is at the front or the back of the engine, how much of the drive is replaced, and whether the chain has jumped and damaged valves. Diagnosis is £69 and the quote is itemised afterwards.
Yes. On a front-mounted chain the work is contained; on a rear-mounted one the gearbox has to come out to reach it. Either way it's a day or more, so plan to be without the car rather than waiting for it.
Usually, when the work is booked in with us. It's job dependent rather than automatic and doesn't always apply on smaller jobs, so we tell you which way it falls before you commit to anything.
If it's the 1.2 PureTech, there's no chain in it. That engine runs a cambelt inside the oil, which sheds material and blocks the oil pickup. Different job, different price, and it starts from £599+VAT.
Yes. We have our own recovery truck, so a non-runner, a car in limp mode or one that's been stood for months gets brought in to the Rochester workshop on our own equipment rather than through a third party.
Any make, petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric. A lot of the timing work here is Ford and PSA because of the wet belt design those engines share, but that's a consequence of one fault, not a restriction on what comes in.
