Engine Diagnostics in Medway

A warning light on the dash, and a garage that’s already changed one part and sent you away: that’s how most people end up on this page. We do proper fault finding at our workshop on the Medway City Estate, £69, any make, and we work back to the cause rather than reading out a code and guessing.

Get That Warning Light Looked At Properly

When It's Worth Booking a Diagnostic

The jobs that come into the workshop most often start like one of these:

Engine management light on, or on and off again
Rattle on cold start, or an oil pressure warning
A misfire that’s already had a part fitted for it
Loss of power, limp mode or a car that won’t rev cleanly
Knocks, rumbles or tyres wearing unevenly

You don’t have to work out which of those it is before you ring. That’s the work you’re paying for. Book it in, bring the car to us on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, and if the light on the dash is an oil pressure warning on a 1.0 EcoBoost or a 1.2 PureTech, drive it as little as you can between now and then.

How a Diagnostic Runs, Step by Step

Every car follows the same order, whether it’s a light that’s been on for six months or a running fault nobody has pinned down yet. You’ll know what we found and what caused it before you’re asked to spend anything on putting it right.

Step 1: What the car is actually doing. We start with your account of it. When the fault shows up, cold or warm, at idle or under load, whether it clears itself after a restart, and what’s already been replaced by somebody else. That last answer saves more workshop time than anything else you can tell us.

Step 2: Scan on the OBD port. We pull stored and pending codes, and the freeze-frame data the ECU kept from the moment the fault registered, which tells us engine temperature, load and revs at the time. That is where a diagnostic starts, not where it ends.

Step 3: Testing, not trusting. We watch live data while the engine runs, compare sensor readings against what they should be, and test the circuit the code pointed at rather than assuming the part on the end of it is the problem. Faults that only appear under load or after a few miles get a road test, and that part can’t be rushed.

Step 4: What we found, in plain words. You get the cause, what it takes to fix, and an honest view of whether it’s worth doing. Sometimes the repair costs more than the car is worth and we’ll say so. Being told not to spend the money is a legitimate answer, not a wasted diagnostic.

Step 5: Quote and your decision. Parts, labour and how long it needs, priced before anything is touched. Where you book the repair with us, the £69 is usually credited against it. On smaller jobs it isn’t always, and we’ll tell you which way it falls before you commit rather than after.

Step 6: Repair, road test and handover. Once the work is done the car goes back out on the road so we can confirm the fault has actually gone and the light stays off. Then we talk you through what was wrong, what we changed and anything worth watching from here.

Why a Code Reader Isn't a Diagnosis

A code reader tells you which circuit reported a problem. It doesn’t tell you what caused it. A misfire code names the cylinder and stops there: it could be the coil, the plug, an injector, low compression, a chafed wire, or a vacuum leak upstream of the sensor that flagged it in the first place.

Fit the part the code names and you’ve bought a part, not a repair. That’s how people spend hundreds of pounds and still have the same light a fortnight later. Testing the circuit takes longer than reading it, which is exactly why the £69 buys time and method rather than a plug-in reading.

What Comes Into the Workshop, and Who Brings It

Fords, Peugeots and Citroëns make up a big share of the work, and they arrive together for one reason. Ford’s 1.0 EcoBoost and the PSA 1.2 PureTech, fitted to the 208, 2008 and 308 and the C3 and C4, run the cambelt inside the engine, sitting in the oil. As the belt ages it sheds material into the sump, the debris blocks the oil pickup, and an engine starved of oil pressure doesn’t survive it. Caught early, it’s a belt. Left too long, it’s an engine, which is why a rattle on cold start or oil disappearing between services is worth a diagnostic straight away.

Diesels are the other regular. Short runs across the Medway towns never get the engine hot enough for the filter to regenerate, so soot load climbs, back-pressure builds and the car drops into limp mode. EGR faults turn up in the same cars for the same reason. Beyond that it’s suspension and bearing noises off local road surfaces, intermittent lights nobody has been able to catch, and electrical work: ABS, airbag, immobiliser, charging faults and parasitic drain.

We diagnose all makes, petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric, and older cars are welcome. Plenty of people assume a fifteen-year-old car isn’t worth plugging in. It usually is, and a main dealer’s reluctance to look at it doesn’t change that.

People choose to travel here for it. Most come from Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester, Strood and Rainham, and a fair few make the trip from Maidstone, Sittingbourne and Faversham, or over the bridge from Sheppey, Sheerness and Minster. If somebody is prepared to drive in from the island for a diagnostic, they’ve decided a straight answer is worth the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Technician time and a method. We scan for stored and pending codes, read the freeze-frame data from when the fault registered, watch live data with the engine running, and test the circuit involved instead of taking the code at face value. You then get an explanation of the cause and what putting it right involves. If you book the repair with us, the £69 is usually credited against it, though on smaller jobs it isn't automatic and we'll make that clear before you commit.
That's a common reason people come to us. In most of those cases a code was read, the part it named was fitted, and nothing was tested. We start again from the symptom and work the circuit properly, so tell us what's already been changed and we won't spend your money proving the same thing twice.
Yes. The ECU keeps a record even once the light has cleared, including pending codes and the freeze-frame snapshot of what the engine was doing at the time, so there's usually something to work from. Intermittent faults are the ones most often given up on, and that snapshot is often what narrows them down.
All makes, petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric. Those three come in most often because of the wet belt engines, not because we're limited to them. Older cars are fine too, including ones a main dealer would rather not have on the ramp.
Most are same-day, booked in the morning with an answer that afternoon. The exception is a fault that only appears under load or after a few miles, because the car has to be driven for us to catch it, and road testing can't be squeezed into a short slot. If we think yours falls into that group we'll say so when you book rather than on the day.
