What Is a DPF and What Does it Do?

The DPF sits inside the exhaust system and its whole job is to trap the soot that diesel engines naturally produce. Instead of letting that black harmful smoke blow straight out the back, the DPF catches it and stores it. Once the car gets up to the right temperature, usually on a longer run, the filter burns that soot off so it can clear itself out.

That’s how its meant to work anyway. The problem is most drivers in Kent aren’t doing big motorway journeys every day. • A sluggish, heavy feeling when accelerating
• Higher revs than normal
• Sudden drop in MPG
• Car trying to regenerate (fan noise, odd smells)
• Rough idle
• DPF or engine management light appearing

Preventing DPF Problems

Preventing DPF issues isn’t difficult, but it does require a little bit of awareness. A few simple habits go a long way:

• Take the car for a longer run once a week if you can
• Don’t ignore early warning lights
• Use proper low-ash oil (very important on diesels)
• Keep the car serviced on time
• Avoid constant short trips where possible
• Use good quality fuel
• Fix EGR and boost issues early

When a DPF Can’t Be Saved

In some cases the DPF is too far gone. This happens when:
