Ingenium Timing Chain Replacement Kent

A metallic rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start is the noise most 2.0 Ingenium diesel owners ring us about, usually alongside a timing correlation code or a Restricted Performance message. We diagnose it, and where the timing system is at fault we replace the chains from our workshop on the Medway City Estate in Rochester.

The chain on this engine sits at the gearbox end rather than the front, so it’s an expensive job to get wrong. We confirm what’s actually making the noise before anyone commits to a strip down, and nothing starts without your approval.

How We Check Whether The Timing Chain Is The Problem

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel, engine codes 204DTD and 204DTA, is known for chains and guides that wear early. Two things work against it. The original chains and guides weren’t durable enough, and the engine dilutes its own oil: each time the DPF runs a regen, a little unburnt fuel washes past the pistons and down into the sump. A chain running in thinned oil stretches faster than it should.

That’s why the rattle turns up on high mileage cars, on cars doing mostly short local journeys, and on cars serviced at the maximum interval. If the DPF is regenerating more often than it ought to, that’s worth investigating in its own right, and we clean and restore filters rather than removing them.

The symptoms owners describe to us:

Metallic Rattle Or Chatter On Cold Start
Timing Correlation Codes Such As P0016 Or P0017
Restricted Performance Or Engine Management Warning
Rough Running, Hesitation Or Loss Of Power
Faults That Return After A New Cam Or Crank Sensor

Not one of those confirms a stretched chain on its own, and other faults produce much the same picture. We start from the registration to pin down the exact engine, scan for stored and pending codes, read live data for cam and crank correlation, and listen to the engine from cold. If you’ve already paid for sensors fitted on spec and the fault came straight back, that’s the point to stop guessing. We only recommend the strip down once the timing system is the likely cause.

What Happens If You Leave A Rattling Chain

A stretched chain has slack in it, and slack lets the camshafts drift out of step with the crankshaft. If it jumps a tooth or lets go, valves and pistons meet, and a planned chain job becomes a rebuild or a replacement engine. The difference between those two bills is the whole argument for booking early.

Not every cold start noise is a failing chain, and we’ll say so if yours isn’t. But a rattle that’s lasting longer than it used to, or one that’s now there on a warm start as well, isn’t something to run through another winter.

How Ingenium Timing Chain Replacement Works At Medway Vehicle Services

Everything starts with the diagnosis. Once the timing system is confirmed, you get a written quote covering parts, labour and timescale, and we don’t begin until you’ve agreed it.

The repair renews the whole timing system rather than the chain making the noise: primary and secondary chains, all guides, tensioners and sprockets, the rear timing cover seals and gaskets, then fresh oil and a filter. Cam and crank timing is set and verified to factory specification before the engine runs, and we look over the oil pickup and related parts while the engine is open.

Because the gearbox has to come out to reach the rear cover, this isn’t a same day repair. Plan on leaving the car with us, and we’ll confirm the hand back date when we quote. Anything found during the strip down is explained and priced to you before it’s done.

What Ingenium Timing Chain Replacement Costs

We price each car after diagnosis, because the engine code, the parts fitted and what turns up during the strip down all move the figure. For budgeting, the fixed prices UK Ingenium specialists advertise average out at roughly £2,300 including VAT, with most sitting between £2,000 and £2,500.

Treat that as the range for a preventative job on an engine that hasn’t failed yet. If the chain has already jumped and there’s internal damage, the work moves into rebuild or replacement engine territory and can only be priced once we’ve looked. That gap is the reason a rattle is worth a call now rather than in six months.

Why A Cheaper Quote Isn't Always The Same Job

Two quotes on this engine can describe very different work. The variables are whether both chains are being replaced or only the primary, the grade of parts used, and what warranty sits behind the repair. Since nearly all the cost is the labour to reach the chain, replacing half the system to save a little on parts is money badly spent.

The oil side is worth asking about too. If chain or guide debris has already reached the oil system, or oil pressure has dropped off, that needs assessing before anything goes back together rather than after.

Finding Us From Across Kent

The workshop is on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, just off the A289. From Gravesend it’s the A2 east to Junction 1 of the M2 and onto the A289; from Sittingbourne and Faversham it’s the M2 westbound to the same junction. Maidstone drivers come up the A229 to Junction 3, and from West Malling and Snodland the A228 runs down through Cuxton to Strood.

Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham are all a few minutes away. Since the car will be with us for more than a day, most people drop it off and we agree the collection day once the quote is approved. If it isn’t safe to drive, ask us about collection or recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

From 2015 onwards the 2.0 Ingenium diesel went into the Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, Discovery, Range Rover Velar, the Range Rover Sport as the SD4, the Defender D240 and the Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace. We confirm the exact engine from your registration or VIN before anything is quoted or ordered.

Not necessarily. These engines are noisy for a moment on a frosty start. What concerns us is a metallic chatter that runs on for several seconds, one that's getting longer over the weeks, or one that turns up when the engine is already warm. Book in first thing and we'll start it from genuinely cold with you there.

We'd rather you didn't. Every mile on a stretched chain is another chance for it to jump timing, and the valve and piston damage that follows costs far more than the chain work. If there's a warning light or a loss of power alongside it, get it booked instead of driven.

Yes, but it's a different conversation. Once a chain has jumped, internal damage is likely, so we assess the engine first and quote on what we find, which may be a rebuild or a replacement engine rather than a chain kit. We'll tell you honestly if the car isn't worth the money.

Annual oil changes with the correct grade, and don't run out to the maximum service interval, particularly if most of your driving is short local trips. Regens matter too, because each one puts a little fuel into the oil, so a DPF working properly keeps the oil in better shape.

Yes. It's the same 2.0 diesel across both marques, so an XE or F-Pace is the same repair as a Discovery Sport. The 2.0 Ingenium petrol and the six cylinder Ingenium engines follow a different procedure and are quoted separately.
