A worn wet belt can cause serious engine damage by shedding debris into the oil system, reducing oil pressure, and damaging internal engine components long before the belt itself fails. Common signs include cold-start rattles, oil pressure warnings, rough running, and engines approaching the replacement interval.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we carry out wet belt inspections and replacements for Aylesford drivers, checking the belt, oil condition, and related components properly before any work begins.

A wet belt is the trade name we use for a timing belt that sits inside the engine and runs immersed in engine oil. Manufacturers designed wet belt systems to last as long as a chain in a quieter, more compact package.
In practice, we’ve found that the belt material breaks down over time. Particles wear off the rubber and end up in the oil, where they can block the oil pickup and starve the engine of lubrication. That’s why we strongly recommend following the manufacturer’s replacement interval for wet belt systems.
When a wet belt replacement interval is missed, you’re not just risking the belt snapping; you’re also risking oil pump issues and engine damage.
Wet belts usually warn us before they fail, with signs that build up over weeks or months. The ones we see most often:
We’d rather not wait for symptoms. The manufacturer’s interval is set on belt wear, not warning lights, so if yours is coming up on the mileage in the handbook, that alone is reason enough to book it in. Catching it early is almost always cheaper than catching it late.
These are the signs we tell drivers to take seriously:
The wet belt itself.
The oil-pump pickup screen.
The engine oil and oil filter.
The timing cover seal.

Wet belt replacement isn’t a quick job. It involves removing components from the front of the engine, draining and refilling the oil, replacing the belt itself, and replacing related components and seals where required for your specific engine. While we’re carrying out the work, we’ll inspect accessible areas for signs of belt debris or contamination where appropriate.
If there’s material in the system, we want to find it before we put the engine back together. We don’t carry every make’s parts as stock, so once the inspection’s done, we’ll order the right belt, pump, and seals for your car.
The price varies widely by engine. Labour times are substantial on most wet belt jobs, but parts costs can vary depending on the engine design, the components required, and the condition of the engine once inspected.
We quote in writing after we’ve seen the car and confirmed which belt, pump, and seals your needs. If your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, let us know when booking so we can discuss the appropriate service approach.
We’re about seven miles north of Aylesford on Medway City Estate. The run up is straightforward: A229 towards Rochester, then follow the signs for Anthony’s Way on the estate.
We’re at Unit 3, Cliffe Yard. You can drop the car with us, and we’ll discuss collection or local transport options when you book. If we’ll have the car for a day or longer, let us know when you book, and we’ll work something out.
It depends on the engine. Wet belts started showing up in mainstream petrol and diesel engines from around 2010 onwards, mostly on smaller-capacity downsized engines designed to meet emissions and economy targets. The easiest way to know for sure is to check your handbook for the cambelt service interval, or call us with your registration and we'll tell you whether yours runs a wet belt, a dry belt, or a chain.
Availability depends on parts supply and workshop scheduling for your specific engine. Some belts and oil pumps are available quickly through local suppliers. Others may need to be ordered from a manufacturer or specialist supplier, which can extend lead times. Call us with your registration, and we'll check what's available before we book the slot.
We'll stop and call you. If we open the engine and find belt debris in the oil galleries, scoring on a bearing, or a seal that's beyond the original quote, we'll talk you through what we're seeing, what it means for your car, and what it costs to put right before we go any further. We don't carry on with extra work without your sign-off.
If requested when booking, we can usually retain removed parts for collection with the vehicle. Used oil is disposed of through the workshop's waste handling process. Old belts, pumps, and seals can usually be retained on request.
It almost never is. A snapped wet belt can lead to valve damage, oil pressure issues, or major internal engine damage. Repairs after a failure can become significantly more expensive than scheduled belt replacement. Replacing the belt at the manufacturer's interval is a planned major job. Replacing it after a failure may involve major engine repair or replacement costs.
We confirm a hand-back time at the booking, after we've checked the engine spec and what's likely involved. Wet belt jobs are labour-led rather than parts-led, so the time depends on the engine layout more than the parts list.
Possibly. The wet belt design has been used across several manufacturers' engine families since the early 2010s, and it isn't always in the marketing brochure. Give us the registration when you call, and we'll check what's in your engine before we book anything in.
The work is covered by the parts supplier's warranty and our own labour standards. Both sit on the invoice, in writing, so there's no ambiguity later. The original manufacturer's warranty isn't ours to extend.
