If your Ford has started rattling on cold start, showing oil pressure warnings, or is getting close to the wet belt service interval, it’s worth checking before the problem turns into major engine damage. Wet belts wear from inside the engine oil, which means the early warning signs are often easy to miss until oil pressure or timing issues begin to appear.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we help Folkestone drivers deal with wet belt problems before they become engine rebuilds. We inspect the belt, oil system, and related components properly first, then carry out the replacement using the correct parts and procedures for your exact Ford engine.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait till your belt goes. Call Medway Vehicle Services and we can get it resolved as soon as possible.
Engine Warning Light On
Low Oil Pressure Warning
Rattling or Unusual Engine Noise
Poor Performance or Misfiring
Service History Shows It’s Due
A conventional timing belt runs dry between the crankshaft and camshafts, sealed away from engine oil. Ford’s wet belt design runs inside the engine oil and also drives the oil pump. This is used in engines like the 1.0 EcoBoost and EcoBlue range to reduce noise and improve efficiency across Ford petrol and diesel models.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we see how this changes maintenance. Wet belts depend heavily on oil quality rather than just mileage and age. When oil changes are delayed or incorrect, the belt can deteriorate, shedding particles that block the oil pickup, trigger oil pressure warnings, and in severe cases, cause engine damage.
Short trips that don’t fully heat the oil make this worse, which is why servicing is often required earlier than original factory intervals.
If the wet belt snaps on an interference engine, the damage is often severe, including bent valves, damaged pistons, and potentially a full engine replacement. Ford may state extended service intervals, but in our experience, we often recommend earlier replacement intervals based on condition and usage history.
At Medway Vehicle Services, early signs are often subtle but consistent:
We always recommend inspection first to confirm whether the belt, oil pump pickup, or related components are affected before replacement.
You drop the car off at our workshop on Medway City Estate. Our technician runs a diagnostic scan first, checks the oil for shed-belt debris, reads any stored fault codes for oil pressure or cam timing, and inspects the front of the engine for early oil leakage from the belt cover.
Once the inspection is done, we call you with the findings and a written quote before any further work starts. You decide whether to go ahead. No work happens without your approval, and no quote is revised mid-job without a fresh call.

A wet belt replacement is a full system job, not just a belt swap:
We then warm the engine, road test it, and confirm stable oil pressure and clean operation before handover.
This is the anti-promise on this service. If the inspection shows the oil pump or the oil pickup is already in trouble, we won’t quote belt-only and send the car back out. The cheaper job in the short term becomes the catastrophic job six months later. We would rather have the harder conversation about a fuller repair than do a cosmetic belt swap.
We also won’t quote a wet belt over the phone. Two cars with the same engine code can need different parts depending on service history, oil condition, and how the previous garage put it back together. The inspection is what makes the quote real.
Wet belt jobs become urgent if there’s a cold-start rattle lasting over 30 seconds or getting worse over time, or any sign of low oil pressure, such as warning lights or flickering on start-up. Both indicate possible belt or oil pickup issues, and we’d recommend booking immediately to avoid engine damage.

We’re based at Cliffe Yard, Anthonys Way, Medway City Estate, Rochester. From Folkestone, it’s around 45 minutes via the M20, M2, and A2. The route is mainly motorway and dual carriageway.
We regularly see Folkestone drivers who prefer a wet belt specialist rather than a general garage. If an oil pressure warning or a severe rattle is present, do not continue driving; contact us first to discuss recovery or the safest next steps.
The 1.0 EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol fitted to most Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, Puma, EcoSport and Transit Connect models from around 2012 onwards, and the 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBlue diesels fitted to the Transit, Tourneo and Focus diesel from 2018. Some Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall engines built on the same platform share the same design. We can confirm yours from the registration when you call.
Not honestly. We can tell you from the registration whether your engine has a wet belt and whether it is at or past the service interval. We cannot tell you whether the belt is worn, whether the oil pickup is blocked, or whether the pump needs work, without putting the car on the ramp. The inspection is what turns guesswork into a real quote.
It is a timing belt, in the sense that we use it to keep the crankshaft and camshafts in time. It is not the same as a conventional cam belt because we run it in oil rather than dry. A traditional cam belt kit and a wet belt kit are not interchangeable, and cam belt pricing on a wet belt engine may indicate incorrect parts or methods are being applied.
We would generally recommend not driving the vehicle until it has been assessed. A flickering light on cold start that goes out within a minute should still be checked promptly; a steady light at idle or under load may require vehicle recovery rather than continued driving. We can give you the number of a local recovery service or talk through whether your breakdown cover applies. The 50-minute drive from Tonbridge may not be advisable if the engine is already showing oil-pressure symptoms.
Yes. If the car is in for the wet belt anyway, an interim service, a full service, brake or clutch work, diagnostics, or a tyre change can run alongside if parts are in stock or can be ordered for the same window. We mentioned this on the inspection call, so the second visit isn't needed.
We call with the findings, the photographs, and the honest options. Sometimes the answer is a wet belt service plus oil pump work. Sometimes the answer is that the engine has gone past economic repair, and the conversation shifts to a replacement engine or, occasionally, to whether the car is worth keeping. Either way, you get a clear picture before any money is committed.
