If your wet-belt engine is showing warning signs, we would not leave it until the engine fails. A worn wet belt can shed rubber into the oil system, block the pickup pipe, and turn a planned belt replacement into a much bigger repair.
We carry out wet belt inspections and replacement work from our independent workshop on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, a short drive from Gillingham. We inspect the belt, check what the job actually needs, and give you an upfront quote before any major work begins.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait till your belt goes. Call Medway Vehicle Services and we can get it resolved as soon as possible.
Engine Warning Light On
Low Oil Pressure Warning
Rattling or Unusual Engine Noise
Poor Performance or Misfiring
Service History Shows It’s Due
When we inspect a timing belt, we look at how that specific engine is designed. A traditional timing belt usually runs dry on the outside of the engine and is replaced at the mileage interval set by the manufacturer. A wet belt sits inside the engine and runs in oil. On some engines, it can also be linked to the oil pump arrangement.
When wet belt material starts to break down, small fragments can move through the lubrication system. In some cases, the first warning is low oil pressure rather than belt noise.
Wet belt designs appear on small petrol and diesel engines from several major manufacturers, but whether your car has one depends on the exact engine variant. We can check this before advising on the next step.
When we’re checking for early wet belt warning signs, we look for things like oil-related warnings, unusual engine noise, or running issues. We also pay attention to a flickering oil pressure light, or a service indicator message that lines up with the manufacturer’s belt-change interval.
None of these signs on their own confirms a wet belt issue, but when we see them alongside the engine type and mileage, they’re enough for us to put the wet belt on the inspection list before something fails.
If your car is starting to feel rougher and you’re not sure why, the wet belt may be one of the things we check, depending on the engine and service history.
A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil rather than in a dry case. We see this design used because it can reduce friction and run quietly, but as the belt ages, the rubber can shed tiny particles into the oil. Those particles can clog the oil pickup pipe.
If that pickup is blocked, the engine can be starved of oil. At that point, we’re no longer just looking at a belt change; it can turn into a much bigger repair.
The belt replacement interval varies by engine and model year and should be checked against the manufacturer’s schedule. When we book the work, we check the correct interval before advising.
Pricing depends on the engine, the parts kit needed, and whether anything else needs doing while the sump is off. We give you an upfront quote after the initial inspection. We won’t carry out the larger work without your approval, and we will explain costs before carrying out repairs.
If the engine is making unusual noise and the oil pressure light is flickering, the belt or the pickup may already be on the way out. Driving on at that point puts the engine itself at risk; the cost of a belt job on a healthy engine is a fraction of an engine replacement.
We’d rather inspect the car early than see it arrive later on a recovery truck. If you’re worried, call and describe what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you whether it can wait for a planned booking or needs looking at sooner.

Our workshop sits on the Medway City Estate in Rochester, the other side of the river from Gillingham. From Gillingham High Street, head towards Rochester via the A289, Medway Tunnel, or Medway Bridge, depending on traffic. Ask us about parking on site once you’re at Cliffe Yard.
If a drop-off is awkward around work, talk to us about timings when you book. Wet belt work usually needs to be planned in advance because the bay time and parts need scheduling.
The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the Ford 1.5 EcoBlue diesel are common Ford wet-belt enquiries for us; exact fitment depends on model and year. Some PSA/Stellantis 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines used in Peugeot, Citroën, and Vauxhall models also use belt-in-oil systems, depending on engine and model year. The exact replacement interval varies by engine and model year, so it should be checked against the vehicle details when the work is booked.
Wet belt jobs can take around 6 to 10 hours in many cases, depending on the vehicle and engine. The job itself is labour-heavy and can involve significant strip-down work, so you'll need a plan for the car for that period. We'll talk through timings when you book.
For wet-belt engines that are due or showing symptoms, yes. The cost of a planned belt change can be much lower than repairing a failed wet belt, clogged pickup, or oil-starved engine. We'd rather see you on schedule than on recovery.
Independent garages may be able to carry out servicing and repair work within the manufacturer’s warranty period, provided the work is carried out correctly, suitable parts are used, and the warranty terms are followed. We use quality parts from trusted suppliers; confirm any warranty paperwork needs when you book. If you're inside an active manufacturer warranty and want to double-check, have a quick conversation with them first, and we'll wait.
No. The work is usually too involved to treat as a same-day repair. We inspect the vehicle, confirm the scope, and arrange the bay time and parts the job needs. Brakes, batteries, and diagnostics we can usually do the same day; wet belts, we plan ahead for.
We commonly use aftermarket wet-belt kits where suitable, and the right option depends on the exact vehicle, parts availability, customer preference, and engine condition. The cheaper aftermarket belts often shed material faster, which puts the oil pump pickup back under load earlier than the manufacturer's interval suggests. If you've had a recent change with a non-OE belt, mention it on the call.
