When we inspect a timing belt, we look at how that specific engine is designed. A traditional timing belt usually runs dry on the outside of the engine and is replaced at the mileage interval set by the manufacturer. A wet belt sits inside the engine and runs in oil. On some engines, it can also be linked to the oil pump arrangement.
When wet belt material starts to break down, small fragments can move through the lubrication system. In some cases, the first warning is low oil pressure rather than belt noise.
Wet belt designs appear on small petrol and diesel engines from several major manufacturers, but whether your car has one depends on the exact engine variant. We can check this before advising on the next step.
The wet belt drives the camshafts from the crankshaft, just like a dry timing belt or chain. The difference is that it runs inside the engine in oil.
Over time, the belt material breaks down and sheds particles into the oil. These particles can collect on the oil pickup strainer at the bottom of the sump. Once the pickup starts to block, the oil pump cannot draw enough oil, and the engine can lose pressure.
We also see belts stretch, crack, or lose teeth, which can throw the timing out and trigger engine faults. When this happens, we remove the timing cover, drop the sump, clean the pickup, and fit a new wet belt and tensioner kit.
Most early signs show up at start-up. The pickup strainer blocks gradually, so the engine may struggle to build oil pressure when cold.

Some cars give no warning, so mileage and age matter too. We check the correct wet belt interval for your exact engine before quoting. Most intervals are around six to ten years, or roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the engine.

We may remove front-end parts and the timing cover, then lock the cam and crank to hold timing. We drain the oil, remove the sump where needed, clean the oil pickup strainer, fit the correct belt kit, and reseal everything properly.
We refill the engine with the manufacturer’s specified oil grade and run it to confirm oil pressure. If the oil pump is worn or the pickup is heavily blocked, the job may take longer. We inspect first, quote parts clearly in writing, and never proceed without your approval.
Pricing depends on the engine, the parts kit your car needs, and whether the oil pump or oil pickup needs replacing alongside the belt. We quote in writing after a workshop inspection, with the parts list and labour set out before any work starts. Engines that share the oil pump drive with the wet belt push the parts list higher, and a heavily blocked pickup adds time on the sump side.
We won’t quote a number over the phone for a job we haven’t seen, and we don’t add parts to the bill once work is underway without ringing you first. The inspection finds out what the engine actually needs, and the quote follows that, not the other way round.
Two situations move this from a planned job to an urgent one. The first is a confirmed oil pressure warning light, even an intermittent one, on an engine known to use a wet belt.
The second is a cold-start rattle that’s been getting longer or louder over recent weeks. Both are signs that the pickup is starting to block. Driving on through either one risks bearing damage that turns a belt job into an engine replacement, which, on the affected engines, runs into thousands.
If the engine has already lost oil pressure, we recover it to the workshop rather than have you drive it in. We won’t tell you the work is fine to defer when the warning signs say otherwise.
If your car has a known wet-belt engine, such as many Ford EcoBoost/EcoBlue or Stellantis PureTech applications, and you’re hearing a cold-start rattle or seeing an oil-pressure warning, arrange an inspection and avoid unnecessary driving until it’s been checked.
The rattle means the belt is shedding into the oil already. Every cold start from that point pulls more material through the pump pickup. The repair costs the same whether it’s done now or in four weeks. The risk to the engine doesn’t.
If you drive a Ford with a 1.0 EcoBoost engine (Fiesta, Focus, Puma, B-Max, EcoSport, Tourneo Connect from around 2012 onward), a Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, a Stellantis 1.2 PureTech (Peugeot 208, 308, 2008, 3008, Citroen C3, C4, DS3), or some Vauxhall 1.2 and 1.4 turbo petrols, you've almost certainly got a wet belt. Manufacturers have shortened the intervals over time as field data has come in. Ford currently lists 8 years or 80,000 miles for the 1.0 EcoBoost. Stellantis revised its PureTech interval down to 6 years or 62,000 miles. The owner's manual is the source of truth for your specific year and model, and if the car has been doing short trips or missed oil changes, sooner is better than later.
Two things, often at the same time. The belt teeth strip, and the engine loses timing, which can bend valves and damage pistons. And the rubber fragments shed from the belt block the oil pump pickup, which starves the engine of oil. A wet belt failure usually means an engine rebuild or a replacement engine, sometimes more than the car is worth.
Yes. The wet belt's rubber compound is engineered for a specific oil specification. Standard 5W-30 off the shelf isn't the same as Ford WSS-M2C948-B or the Stellantis equivalent. Using the wrong oil accelerates belt breakdown. It's the single biggest cause of premature failure. Always check the spec called for in your handbook before topping up.
Both engines are covered. The 1.0 EcoBoost in particular has a known shorter real-world belt life than the original Ford interval suggested, which is why most independents now recommend earlier replacement than the first published figure.
