If your oil pressure light has flickered, your engine is rattling on cold start, or you’re simply nearing the wet belt interval, it’s usually the point where small symptoms can quickly turn into serious engine damage. Wet belts don’t fail like traditional cambelts; they wear internally through the oil system, which is why early inspection matters.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we carry out wet belt inspections and replacements for Sheerness and Isle of Sheppey drivers at our Rochester workshop, making sure the issue is properly diagnosed and dealt with before it becomes a costly engine repair.

Manufacturers moved the timing belt inside the engine and run it in oil to reduce noise, save space, and improve efficiency. It can also drive parts like the oil pump from the same system as the camshaft.
The downside is that the belt runs in engine oil. As it ages, it can shed small rubber particles into the oil. These can build up in the oil pickup screen and restrict oil flow. That can lead to low oil pressure, warning lights, or engine damage, often before the belt actually snaps. That’s why wet belts have strict replacement intervals.
We usually see warning signs before failure happens:
One symptom alone doesn’t confirm failure, but a few together on a wet-belt engine are a strong sign to get it inspected before it becomes a breakdown.
These are the signs we tell drivers to take seriously:
The wet belt itself.
The oil-pump pickup screen.
The engine oil and oil filter.
The timing cover seal.
What we’ll quote for separately if the inspection finds it:
What we’ll quote for separately if the inspection finds it:
We start with the car on the lift and a look at the oil. The condition of the oil and the state of the pickup tell us early whether we are doing a standard belt replacement or a belt replacement that may include additional components, such as the oil pump.
From there, we strip back to access the belt itself: covers off, ancillary belts and pulleys out of the way, timing locked. The belt is replaced as a kit with the tensioner, idlers, and any seals that are routine for that design. If the oil pump shares the same drive, that goes back together with a new sealing too.
We will not put a fresh, wet belt back into old, contaminated oil. Every wet belt job here ends with an oil and filter change before the engine runs again. We tell you that up front rather than tacking it on at the desk afterwards.
From Sheerness, the journey typically involves the A249 south across the Sheppey Crossing, then onto the M2 westbound and off at Junction 1 for the Medway towns. Without traffic, the journey is around half an hour to the workshop on Medway City Estate in Rochester. In morning peak traffic, it can take longer, typically up to around forty-five minutes.
We are happy to take a drop-off and book a same-day collection where the work allows. For longer jobs that need the car overnight, plan a lift back over the Crossing. The workshop sits inside an industrial estate and may not be on a frequent bus route from Sheppey, so a friend or family pickup is often simpler than public transport for the return journey.
If the car has hit the manufacturer’s mileage or time interval, do not wait for symptoms. Wet belts rarely give extended warning before they shed enough material to cause oil starvation damage, and the resulting repair cost is significantly higher than a planned replacement.
We would also bring you in sooner than scheduled if the oil light has flickered, if the wrong oil grade has been used, or if a service has been stretched. None of those guarantees a problem on its own. Together, they increase the risk and shorten the safe operating window.
Common Ford wet belt enquiries include Fiesta, Focus, Transit, and other EcoBoost or EcoBlue engines, depending on model, engine, and year. Some previous-generation PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech engines used in Peugeot, Citroën, and Vauxhall models are another example, depending on engine and year. Some VW Group engines use timing belts or chains, but they should not be assumed to be wet belt engines without checking the exact engine code. If you're not sure, give us your registration when you call, and we'll confirm what's in your engine.
The correct interval depends on the vehicle and engine, so it should be checked against the manufacturer’s schedule. Real-world experience shows belts can wear earlier than expected, particularly where servicing has been stretched, or the wrong oil grade has been used. If your service book doesn't show a wet belt change and you're past 80,000 miles, it's worth booking an inspection.
If the oil pressure light is on and steady, no. Park up safely and ring us. A wet belt that's already shedding can take the oil pump pickup with it on a longer drive, and that's the difference between a belt job and an engine. We can talk you through recovery options when you call.
No. Wet-belt designs aren't unique to Ford, and we cover all makes for servicing, repairs, and diagnostics from our Rochester workshop. The Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines are the ones we get asked about most often because they're the ones drivers have read about, but the inspection-led approach is the same regardless of the badge.
The service book, if you have it, the registration documents, and a working phone number we can reach you on during the day. If you've had any recent diagnostic codes or warning lights, mention them when you book. The more we know going in, the tighter the inspection focus and the quicker the quote back.
We confirm a hand-back time at the booking, after we've checked the engine spec and what's likely involved. Wet belt jobs are labour-led rather than parts-led, so the time depends on the engine layout more than the parts list.
Possibly. The wet belt design has been used across several manufacturers' engine families since the early 2010s, and it isn't always in the marketing brochure. Give us the registration when you call, and we'll check what's in your engine before we book anything in.
The work is covered by the parts supplier's warranty and our own labour standards. Both sit on the invoice, in writing, so there's no ambiguity later. The original manufacturer's warranty isn't ours to extend.
