If you’re starting to notice a cold-start rattle, oil pressure warnings, or you’re simply getting close to the wet belt interval, it’s the point where ignoring it can quickly turn a routine repair into serious engine damage. Wet belts run inside engine oil, and when they start to break down, they can contaminate the oil system and block the oil pump.
At Medway Vehicle Services, we carry out wet belt inspections and replacements for Westerham drivers at our Rochester workshop, making sure the issue is identified early and dealt with properly before it escalates into a much larger repair.

A wet timing belt sits inside the engine and runs through the oil, unlike a dry cam belt in a sealed housing. It was designed to reduce friction and emissions, and it works well on a healthy engine. The downside is that it’s constantly exposed to engine oil.
In our experience, old oil can break down the belt’s surface. Small fragments can come off and end up in the oil pump pickup. If that blocks, oil pressure drops, parts like the camshafts run dry, and the engine can fail, often with little warning beyond a brief oil-pressure light. The belt doesn’t always snap; failure is often caused by oil starvation first.
Wet belts also tend to have shorter replacement intervals than older cambelts, and manufacturers have reduced these over time. We don’t rely on mileage alone; oil condition and belt condition both matter.
Most drivers come to us due to symptoms or because they are checking the service interval. Key signs include:
We always diagnose properly rather than replace parts unnecessarily, and aim to catch issues early before failure occurs.
These are the signs we tell drivers to take seriously:
The wet belt itself.
The oil-pump pickup screen.
The engine oil and oil filter.
The timing cover seal.
What we’ll quote for separately if the inspection finds it:
What we’ll quote for separately if the inspection finds it:
We start with diagnostics: fault-code scan, inspection where possible, and oil checks for belt contamination. If the belt is degrading, we agree on the full job before starting.
The replacement includes the belt kit, tensioners, idlers, and often the water pump if it is part of the system. We also remove the sump to clean or replace the oil pump pickup. This is critical. In our experience, skipping this step is a common cause of repeated failures, so we don’t skip it.
After the job, we confirm the correct oil pressure before signing off.
Pricing depends on the engine and on what the inspection finds. We quote in writing after we’ve checked the belt condition, the oil pump pickup, and any related wear. Expect the quote to break down the belt kit, the water pump, where it is part of the same job, labour, and any oil pump work needed if the pickup has shed material. Same-make wet-belt jobs vary widely between engines, so we don’t quote a flat figure off a phone call.
Some symptoms move from “book it in this week” to “don’t drive it in”. If the oil-pressure light has come on, even for a few seconds, the right call is to recover the car rather than drive it. The same applies if the engine has started running rough with timing-related fault codes, or if you can see metal or rubber debris on the dipstick or in the oil cap. Continuing to drive in these conditions can be the difference between a belt change and a rebuild.
Our workshop is on Medway City Estate in Rochester, Unit 3, Cliffe Yard, Anthony’s Way, ME2 4DY. From Westerham, the route is typically via the A25 towards Sevenoaks, then connecting to the M26 and M20, before joining the M2 and A289 into the estate. Allow sufficient travel time depending on traffic conditions, particularly during peak hours.
Westerham doesn’t have its own railway station. The nearest stations include Oxted and Sevenoaks, with onward connections available toward Strood and Rochester. Most customers choose to leave the car with us for the day, arrange a lift home, and we will call when the work is signed off.
The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 8 am to 3 pm, so a weekend drop-off is available if it suits the rest of the week better.
No. A normal cambelt runs dry in a sealed housing. A wet belt runs in the engine oil, and the failure mode is different, oil-driven degradation rather than age-driven crack and snap. The work covers different parts and almost always involves removing the sump to clean the oil pump pickup. We treat it as its own job, not a variant of a cambelt change.
The design appears across several modern petrol and diesel families from the early 2010s onwards. Rather than guess, send us your registration, and we'll confirm whether your specific engine is in the wet-belt family before you book.
If the oil pressure light is on and steady, no. Park up safely and ring us. A wet belt that's already shedding can take the oil pump pickup with it on a longer drive, and that's the difference between a belt job and an engine. We can talk you through recovery options when you call.
No. Wet-belt designs aren't unique to Ford, and we cover all makes for servicing, repairs, and diagnostics from our Rochester workshop. The Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines are the ones we get asked about most often because they're the ones drivers have read about, but the inspection-led approach is the same regardless of the badge.
The service book, if you have it, the registration documents, and a working phone number we can reach you on during the day. If you've had any recent diagnostic codes or warning lights, mention them when you book. The more we know going in, the tighter the inspection focus and the quicker the quote back.
We confirm a hand-back time at the booking, after we've checked the engine spec and what's likely involved. Wet belt jobs are labour-led rather than parts-led, so the time depends on the engine layout more than the parts list.
Possibly. The wet belt design has been used across several manufacturers' engine families since the early 2010s, and it isn't always in the marketing brochure. Give us the registration when you call, and we'll check what's in your engine before we book anything in.
The work is covered by the parts supplier's warranty and our own labour standards. Both sit on the invoice, in writing, so there's no ambiguity later. The original manufacturer's warranty isn't ours to extend.
